Chapter 14

Hope gratefully stepped out of the little green sports car onto a Glasgow side street. Looking up at the tall building in front of her, she stretched. At six feet tall, she towered over Clarissa and was not designed for the passenger seat of a small sports car. The drive up from the south felt like a long one and Hope had tried to think through what had happened so far on the case. Were these doctors the answer? She wasn’t sure, but hopefully, she’d find out.

As Clarissa fed some money into a parking metre, Hope walked over to the front door of the building before her and saw the sign for Dr Stevens’s marital counselling. She pressed the intercom, and advised who she was, before the door buzzed open. Slowly, she climbed two flights of stairs, Clarissa behind her, huffing and puffing, and complaining about the lack of a lift, but for Hope, there were no such worries. Finally getting to stretch out her legs was a blessing, not a curse.

The door that presented itself to them on the second floor was simple enough, a brown affair with a dour plaque on it, simply spelling out, once again, Dr Stevens Marital Counselling. Hope knocked on the door and heard a, ‘Come in.’ Inside, a secretary offered Hope a seat saying that the doctor would be with her very shortly and asking whether they would like a cup of tea or coffee. Hope passed, but Clarissa eagerly grabbed a coffee, reminding Hope of Macleod, that the older detectives seemed to live off the stuff.

It took another two minutes before they were shown into an office with a desk on one side and a small set of sofas in the other corner. Dr Stevens was almost as tall as Hope but was of a skinnier configuration. She looked tall and elegant with brown hair that had some white streaks running through it. She wore a black jacket with a long pencil skirt and a white blouse. Hope noted the heart locket hanging from around her neck.

‘Thank you for seeing us, doctor. I’m Detective Sergeant Hope McGrath. This is Detective Sergeant Clarissa Urquhart. I hope we aren’t disturbing you, but we need some information about some of your clients.’

‘Well, I hope I can give it to you,’ said Dr Stevens. ‘There is client confidentiality.’

‘Said client is dead, so I’m hoping that won’t be a problem.’

‘Is their partner or spouse still alive?’

‘Yes, they are, but we’re actually running a murder investigation, so anything you can tell us would be gratefully received.’

‘That’s understood, but my first duty is to my clients,’ said Dr Stevens.

‘Andrew Culshaw,’ said Clarissa, ‘he was a client of yours, wasn’t he?’

‘The Culshaws? Yes, terrible tragedy falling off the ferry.’

‘You said, “falling off,”’ said Hope. ‘You don’t believe he committed suicide then?’

‘Well, I’m just saying what I know. He fell off the ferry. Did he jump? I don’t know. Was he pushed? I’m beginning to wonder because you’re here.’

Hope thought the woman was fairly smart, not giving away anything, choosing her words wisely.
